FIRE SAFETY TIPS
The Mancelona Fire District is committed to educating families about fire safety, how to prevent fires and what to do in the event of a fire. Volunteer firefighters visit the local schools periodically during the school year to talk with kids and remind them of the dangers of fire, and how to think and act smart to avoid starting one. If you are interested in an educational program for kids, please contact the Fire Chief.
Below are some safety tips from the Mancelona Fire District.
- Keep matches, cigarette lighters and butane fire starters away from small children
- Unplug small appliances (toasters, coffee pots) when not in use
- Never leave a stove top, oven, clothes washer or dryer running when you are away
- Use caution when using extension cords. Never use cords that are worn are frayed or have exposed wires
- Always keep burnables, such as dish towels, plastics and paper, at least three feet away from the stove top.
- Never leave candles burning when you are not home, and do not allow children to have candles or incense burning in their bedrooms
- Make an escape plan for your family. Find two exits out of every room. Pick a meeting place outside. Once outside, call 911 from a cell phone or neighbor's house. Once you're out, stay out! Never go back into a burning building.
- Place a reflective decal inside young children's bedroom windows so firefighters can see then from the outside. The decals indicate that children are in that room.
- Smoke alarms should be placed on every level in your home. Check them monthly to be certain they are working, and replace batteries twice a year (a good time to do this is the start and end of Daylight Savings time.)
